LAST YEAR

2012 SEASON

This season the Spartans had a completely new coaching staff. Head Coach Jake Johnson and assistant Andy Hilton, who both played for long-time coach Mark Sweeney, led Gates Chili to their first winning season since 2008. The Spartans finished the regular season at 9-7, which at 8-6 placed them fourth in the Monroe County D3. After entering the Class A tournament seeded sixth they finished as seeded with a loss to third seeded Pittsford in the quarter final round.

Sixteen players made the offensive book for Gates although only five had more than ten points during the season. Senior offensiveman John Wise led in goal production and points with 18g-8a (26 pts). Senior midfielder Ralph Taliento led in assists and shared in points with 13g-13a (26 pts). The others with ten or more points were senior middie London Booker (8g-4a), junior midfielder Joe Corona (7g-4a) and junior attackman Phil Ruf (15g-2a). Senior goaltender Tyler Jacobson had most of the time between the pipes and recorded 193 saves (61%) while senior defenseman Steve Hilsdorf led the long stick out front. Corona led in ground ball pickups with fifty-five and sophomore defenseman Alex Saavedra was close behind with fifty-three.

Hilsdorf and Jacobson were named to the Monroe County D-3 first team list and Taliento was named to the second team. Hilsdorf and Booker announced the decision to continue playing in college and both chose Roberts Wesleyan which is nearly in their back yards.
